Orientation 2017: Everything you need to know

What is Orientation?

Time to get excited.

Orientation is your chance to experience being a UON student and get your first taste of uni life. Connect with other students – both new and returners – and learn about the opportunities that await you at the University of Newcastle.

During Orientation you will get to meet staff, learn the ins and outs of your campus, and have a tonne of fun.

Faculty orientation day

Your Faculty will host their own Orientation Day where you can learn about being a student in your particular faculty.

The day typically consists of:

  • Student registration
  • Welcome session
  • Morning tea
  • Degree information session
  • BBQ lunch and entertainment
  • Campus tours on demand
  • Smart Study Workshop: this is where you can learn strategies for lecture success such as notetaking, effective reading and time management.

Why should you attend?

According to Academic Registrar Gail White, “students who come to Orientation are more likely to succeed at university”.

Attending Orientation gives you the opportunity to meet staff and students who will be taking your university journey with you. A number of workshops are on offer to help you develop your academic skills and make you familiar with UON’s online systems. By familiarising yourself with your campus during Orientation you’re less likely to get lost and will feel more confident when classes start.

So come along and make sure you get the best start possible to your study.

Orientation at Callaghan runs from Tuesday 20th February through to Friday 24th February.

On top of your specific faculty orientation day, there will heaps of fun activities happening across campus for Orientation such as the Expo, Open Mic night, Sports Jam and O’ Party!
