The Academic Excellence Scholarships Recognising Outstanding Performance in Undergraduate Studies were established to reward hard work, persistence and dedication to academic excellence. In this ‘Meet the Scholar’ series we will introduce you to those undergraduate students who are the 2020 recipients of this generous scholarship. Are you ready to be inspired?

What program are you studying?
Bachelor of Business – double majoring in Human Resources and Leadership & Management.
What year of study are you in?
Second-year!
What did you feel when you heard you were the recipient of the Academic Excellence Scholarships Recognising Outstanding Performance in Undergraduate Studies?

It was a real surprise, I had no idea it was coming! Once the shock wore off, the excitement kicked in and I couldn’t wait to share the news with my family and friends. I feel so incredibly grateful to be recognised for my hard work.

What do you think are the personal qualities that have contributed to your academic achievements?
I think the key qualities that have contributed to my achievements would have to be passion, time management, and initiative. It’s so much easier to do well when you are studying something you have a passion for. Time management has also played a major role in my studies, as it’s not always easy to coordinate uni, work, and social life! That’s where initiative comes in – I do my best to avoid procrastinating because once you’re over that first hurdle, it’s so much easier to keep the motivation flowing.
How do you motivate yourself towards your studies?
I keep myself motivated by remembering where I want to be and having a clear plan of how I’m going to get there. I also work in the field that I am studying and every day I am faced with new challenges, which motivates me to continue learning and developing my skills.
Who are your role models?
I couldn’t be where I am today without the support of my amazing family and friends who keep me grounded and have always been by my side when things get overwhelming. I am also inspired by my peers – it’s so encouraging to see others putting themselves out there and achieving their goals. If they can do it, I can too!
What are your goals for the future?
Once I finish my undergraduate studies, I am planning to continue studying and complete my honours and maybe even a Master of Human Resource Management. Career-wise, I am really attracted to the idea of becoming a university lecturer, but who knows what the future holds!
What are three things you enjoy most about studying at the University of Newcastle?
My three favourite things about UON are the flexibility, support, and atmosphere of the campus. UON provides a lot of flexible study/class options, which is so helpful when trying to manage work and study. The support is second to none and all my lecturers have been so approachable and welcoming. The NUspace campus is by far my favourite of all the campuses because it’s so convenient with classrooms, library and staff in the one building. Plus, no mozzies!
What tips do you have for other students when it comes to excelling in their studies?

My biggest tip for my fellow students would be to trust yourself and be patient – remember that you’re not going to know everything there is to know straight away, that’s why you’re at uni! Also, stay organised because no matter how hard you try sometimes life just gets in the way. Pressure doesn’t always make diamonds, so stay on top of your due dates and give yourself enough time to do your assignments. Finally, don’t let uni consume you – finding that balance is so essential to both your studies and your mental health. Give yourself time to relax and reward yourself for your achievements, you deserve it!
