Although the year is starting to come to a close, there are still plenty of fun social events right around the corner! I’ve gotten in touch with some of the Clubs on campus, to shine a spotlight on some of the exciting events in store for October.
Historia – Dress Up Trivia Night
Historia is a social club for any students with an interest in history, mythology or folklore – no matter what degree you’re enrolled in. If you’re a fan of trivia, dress ups, rap battles and charades, come along to the Trivia Night at Callaghan campus on 12 October. There will be prizes for the winning team and the best dressed, so why not get dressed up as your favourite fairy tale character and check it out for yourself. For more information, contact historiaclubuon@gmail.com.
UON Strength – Strong Man Classes
If you’re interested in Strongman, Powerlifting and Bodybuilding, check out the UON Strength Society! It runs regular get-togethers and training sessions and is hosting Strong Man Classes on Saturday mornings throughout October. These sessions are a great way to enhance your skills and meet like-minded people in a safe and encouraging environment. If you’re interested in taking part, you can check out the registration link and social media profiles here.
UON Musos – Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier
If you have a passion for music, whether you play an instrument yourself or you’re looking to meet people who also appreciate the music artform, UON Musos could be the club for you! They’re currently in the final stages of putting together a production called ‘Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Visier’ which puts a unique twist on the classic Disney’s ‘Aladdin’. The show will be running Friday nights and Saturdays from 21-29 October at the Creative Arts Space Theatre and you can grab tickets here.

UON Writers’ Club – Short Story Awards Night
UON Writers’ Club is a place for writers of all stripes to find a sense of community and share the joy of writing. The club will be hosting a Short Story Awards Night at the Press Bookhouse on 16 October to celebrate the winners of the short story competition. The night includes canapes and light entertainment and all are welcome! There’s a small fee of $2 for members and $10 for non-members, with proceeds going to Literacy for Life, so you can enjoy a night out while supporting a great cause. If you’d like to come along, you can register via the Facebook event page.
UON Dance – Community Video Project
UON Dance is a multi-genre dance club open to anyone with a passion for dance. They’re planning a super exciting video project on 28 October to celebrate Newcastle’s love for dance, where they’ll film a freestyle dance at a local venue in the heart of Newcastle. It’s open to anyone who wants to join, whether you want to be filmed or watch it happen. If you’re interested in taking part, you can reach out to uondancers@gmail.com.

This quick whirlwind tour has only just scratched the surface of the many great Clubs events that are coming up this year. If you’d like to see the full range of Clubs and dive deeper into upcoming events, you can browse them all at the UNSA Clubs page.
