The Academic Excellence Scholarships Recognising Outstanding Performance in Undergraduate Studies were established to reward hard work, persistence and dedication to academic excellence. In this ‘Meet the Scholar’ series we will introduce you to those undergraduate students who are the 2020 recipients of this generous scholarship. Are you ready to be inspired?
What program are you studying?
Bachelor of Business majoring in Marketing
What year of study are you in?
My third and final year.
What did you feel when you heard you were the recipient of the Academic Excellence Scholarships Recognising Outstanding Performance in Undergraduate Studies?
I’ve waited a long time to use the word flabbergasted, so probably that. I didn’t do that well in high school, so in some ways proud as well.

What do you think are the personal qualities that have contributed to your academic achievements?
I think curiosity is a big driver. I love learning new things and challenging myself, which has probably contributed towards my academic performance.
How do you motivate yourself towards your studies?
I’m very aware of the end goal and I think that makes pushing myself to do well a lot easier. There’s also an element of proving to myself that I can do well that drives me. I never find the motivation to do anything when I’m tired, so getting enough sleep is key.
Who are your role models?
The people I surround myself with! I have so many positive role models in my life that have qualities I aspire towards.
What are your goals for the future?
To stop stressing about the little things and take more risks! In the long run I’d like to start my own business, but first I’d like to immerse myself in the marketing field and gain some more hands-on experience.
What are three things you enjoy most about studying at the University of Newcastle?
BusCom is definitely one. It’s been such a great way to meet people and get involved with uni life. I also enjoy the blended learning method as it gives me the independence to learn at my own pace. The university also has some fantastic lecturers that make learning simple and fun.
What tips do you have for other students when it comes to excelling in their studies?
Take regular breaks and find the time of day when you’re the most productive. I think you also have to have a degree of passion for what you’re studying, if not it becomes something you avoid doing. Always, always prioritise your mental health.
