Meet Shue Yin Tan: Academic Excellence Scholar 2020

The Academic Excellence Scholarships Recognising Outstanding Performance in Undergraduate Studies were established to reward hard work, persistence and dedication to academic excellence. In this ‘Meet the Scholar’ series we will introduce you to those undergraduate students who are the 2020 recipients of this generous scholarship. Are you ready to be inspired?

Bachelor of Speech Pathology
What year of study are you in?
2nd Year.
What did you feel when you heard you were the recipient of the Academic Excellence Scholarships Recognising Outstanding Performance in Undergraduate Studies?

I was pretty shocked and had to re-read the email multiple times. Still pretty shocked about it but am very grateful and honoured to be a recipient.

What do you think are the personal qualities that have contributed to your academic achievements?

Lots of discipline and determination plus a constant reminder to give my 100% in everything I do.

How do you motivate yourself towards your studies?
I find a lot of my course content very interesting which gives me the driving force to want to know more. I’ve also got a planner and a to-do list to keep track of my progress.
Who are your role models?
My Dad! Since young he has guided me with lots of wisdom, needed reminders and teachings. He also sets as a great role model to me through the way he leads his life.
What are your goals for the future?
To achieve a successful career as a Speech Pathologist and to help the community development in this field.
What are three things you enjoy most about studying at the University of Newcastle?
I enjoy the nature that I’m surrounded in, the support UON provides and the community.
What tips do you have for other students when it comes to excelling in their studies?

Always give your best even if you don’t succeed the first few times, it’ll be all worth it at the end. Surround yourself with encouraging friends and lead a balanced lifestyle. As much as excelling is important, making sure to take a break once a while is as important! 🙂
