Your Stories – Meet Ava

Name: Ava

Degree: Bachelor of Education (Primary)

What do you enjoy the most about university?

I wasn’t great at high school and never really pushed myself academically, but I’ve found that with university it’s the opposite. I enjoy the feeling of being challenged and I like that I can see the personal progress I’ve made.

Is this where you pictured yourself to be?

I took a gap year after high school that turned into a 4-year gap year as I had no desire to go to university and didn’t know what career I was interested in. Primary education was an impulse decision that I started, not really knowing if I was going to stick with it. I did not imagine I’d enjoy the course so much. I really like the purpose it’s given me, and I enjoy learning from teachers who are passionate about education.

I just completed my first teaching prac which was an amazing experience. I walked away with a lot more self-confidence and reassurance that I’m on the right track.

What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

It has been difficult balancing work, study and socials. I’ve really had to increase my organisation and planning skills. I’ve found setting some clear boundaries has helped as not to overstretch or overwhelm myself. It’s been harder than expected to say no at times to work or friends, but sometimes you have to so you can prioritise study.

Where would you like to take this degree when you finish?

I would love to study abroad, however, it’s hard to structure this degree without adding at least one semester or a year of study. My goal is to finish my degree here and then move and teach overseas. There are so many opportunities and organisations for teaching abroad so I’m excited to see where it leads.
