Bianca Cranswick
What program are you studying?
Bachelor of Psychological Science
What year of study are you in?
2nd/3rd year (I started mid-year in 2018)
What did you feel when you heard you were the recipient of the Academic Excellence Scholarships Recognising Outstanding Performance in Undergraduate Studies?
I was very pleasantly surprised! I had no idea that performing well academically could provide this type of opportunity during undergraduate study.
What do you think are the personal qualities that have contributed to your academic achievements?
I’m really passionate about what I’m studying and have a clear direction in mind. After leaving the workforce to start uni as a mature aged student I have a lot of motivation to make the most of my time here.
How do you motivate yourself towards your studies?
Even if I don’t particularly feel like studying some days, I’ll drag myself into the library and, without the distractions of home, it helps focus and motivate me enough to get on with it. I also have a great support group of friends that I made at uni that help keep me motivated.
Who are your role models?
I admire all women in science, particularly those that manage to balance a successful career and a family. I have encountered numerous lecturers and research supervisors at UON that fit this description, and I consider all of them my role models.
What are your goals for the future?
After finishing my undergraduate years I aim to complete a clinical masters in neuropsychology. In terms of career, I would ideally like to blend clinical practice with neurological research within an academic career.
What are three things you enjoy most about studying at the University of Newcastle?
It’s really easy to find support at the university when I need it, the lecturers and academics who run the courses are fantastic, and UON is an incredibly beautiful place to spend all your time.
What tips do you have for other students when it comes to excelling in their studies?
Make sure that you’re studying something you’re passionate about – it’s difficult to get motivated to study something when you don’t even enjoy it. Also, make social connections at uni – having people to talk to that are studying the same courses or in similar situations can make the whole process less daunting.
