Meet Tiarna Lewis: Academic Excellence Scholar 2020

The Academic Excellence Scholarships Recognising Outstanding Performance in Undergraduate Studies were established to reward hard work, persistence and dedication to academic excellence. In this ‘Meet the Scholar’ series we will introduce you to those undergraduate students who are the 2020 recipients of this generous scholarship. Are you ready to be inspired?

What program are you studying?

Bachelor of Biomedical Science.

What year of study are you in?
3rd year.
What did you feel when you heard you were the recipient of the Academic Excellence Scholarships Recognising Outstanding Performance in Undergraduate Studies?
I was so grateful for the recognition of my efforts and the financial benefit the scholarship could give me.
What do you think are the personal qualities that have contributed to your academic achievements?
I am a conscientious student, I believe in a great organisational system and I am resilient in my study efforts despite adversities.
How do you motivate yourself towards your studies?
I focus on what I want to take out of the information I’m studying, whether it be interest in the area I’m looking at or the ability to be able to apply it in my future career.
Who are your role models?
Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai are two young people who have faced adversities in their lives but have overcome them to make the world a better place and educate others in how to change the world for future generations. I hope to be able to do the same in the medical profession.
What are your goals for the future?
I am hoping to gain entry into the Joint Medical Program next year and study medicine.
What are three things you enjoy most about studying at the University of Newcastle?
The environment, the people and the resources available to students (libraries etc).
What tips do you have for other students when it comes to excelling in their studies?

Focus on what makes you excited about your degree, try and be organised when it comes to planning studying, but definitely find a balance between University life and other accomplishments and your social life.
