50 Years-50 Stories of Open Foundation

As a previous Open Foundation student, it is a privilege to showcase the program and its impact. If you are a current or former Enabling Pathways student, chances are it has had a profound effect on your life. Open Foundation is commemorating 50 years of education through two events: the Winter Ball and the 50 Years-50 Stories exhibition

I had the opportunity to speak with Lauren Crask, who led the creation of the 50 Years-50 Stories exhibition which celebrates 50 years of Enabling Pathways at the University of Newcastle.

Inspiration behind the project

When asked about the inspiration behind starting the exhibition, Lauren mentioned that it stemmed from a collaborative effort within the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre (PALS) at the University of Newcastle. She was inspired by the incredible stories from Open Foundation students, which she encountered during her role as a student liaison officer. These stories of resilience and courage motivated her to capture and showcase them as part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations.

Belief is key

Lauren highlighted several key themes that the exhibition aims to feature through the stories of current and past Open Foundation students. A significant theme is belief in oneself, fostered by the presence of supportive individuals such as teachers, staff members or friends. They inspire confidence in students’ potential to succeed in university education. The exhibition emphasises the transformative power of education and the sense of belonging and capability it instils in students, enabling them to pursue their academic goals and thrive.

A transformative impact

Reflecting on impactful stories from the exhibition, Lauren shared a touching experience of working with a student named Malalay from Afghanistan. Despite facing numerous challenges, Malalay demonstrated immense resilience and determination, submitting her undergraduate application successfully. Her story, along with many others, highlights the transformative impact of Open Foundation in empowering individuals to overcome obstacles and pursue higher education.

Collaboration on awareness: fostering community

Lauren expressed her hopes for the exhibition to raise awareness among current and prospective students about Open Foundation’s supportive network and success stories. Collaborating extensively with students, including visual design, photography and writing, has been integral to the project’s development. By involving students who have gone through the program, the exhibition aims to honour their experiences and create a meaningful connection for younger cohorts.

Future goals and legacy

Looking ahead, Lauren hopes the exhibition will inspire future Open Foundation students and foster a strong alumni network. She believes that showcasing student talent and experiences will instil pride in being associated with Open Foundation and contribute to its ongoing legacy of empowerment and success.

The 50 Years-50 Stories exhibition will commence on 11 July and will be shown as part of the Winter Ball celebrations. All current and past University of Newcastle students are welcome to attend these events, with tickets available for purchase soon.
