Do you know what a viva is? Or have you ever been told to meet with your program convener? Maybe you’ve been asked about your WAM at a job interview. 

The University uses a lot of different slang, terminology, and abbreviations that you probably haven’t encountered before. To help you navigate these tricky terms, a fresh Student Glossary page has been launched where you can find out what everything means. 

For example: 

Viva – A short oral examination where you may be asked to explain or discuss your assessment work to verify your understanding and confirm authorship 

Program Convenor – An academic staff member responsible for the overall management and quality of your program (degree), who can provide advice on course selection and academic matters. 

WAM (Weighted Average Mark) – Your weighted average mark is one way of measuring your academic performance. It is the average mark you’ve achieved across all completed units in your award course, weighted according to the credit point value and academic level of each unit of study.
